FAQ

It's very simple; you Sign up and send us your music, we encode and deliver it to the internet stores and they sell it. They pay us quarterly (minus their small percentage) then we pay you, charging you nothing on your sales. You get the full amount we receive from the stores. We work on a annual subscription basis and there are three different price plans depending on your requirements.

Internet stores, MP3 players and broadband have completely changed how we experience music. The music industry is having to change and the old style relationship between artist and label is breaking down. We believe you should expose your music online immediately, and selling in the trusted stores gives your work added credibility. Our service delivers your music to the best internet stores giving you immediate exposure to millions of users. All this without a big investment and without having to share your royalties with a music label.

Why should I use Kerascene Music?

There are other digital distribution companies but we are offering the easiest route to distribution. That means we do all the work for you: there is no need to encode your music in multiple formats,  there are no hidden costs - including barcodes, there are no industry jargons to learn, we take NO commission on sales - you will not get a better payment deal anywhere else, there are no contracts so there are no legal fees, plus we also arrange your UPC and ISRC codes for free - essential for tracking the sales of your music in the future.

A Universal Product Code (UPC) is nothing more than a unique group of numbers that are exclusively associated with your release. If you already have a UPC then inform us when you send the CD, if not, we will organize one for you free of charge. Each one of your songs needs its own unique International Standard Recording Code (ISRC) code to keep track of how many copies it has sold. Again, if you already have ISRC codes then inform us when you send the CD, if not, we will organize them free of charge. Most other digital distribution companies will charge for these codes as a hidden extra.

Once you have chosen a distribution plan (see Sign up) you will be charged the appropriate rate. The fee is per release. If you want your music taken down prior to six months from when it first became available there is a €75.00 early termination fee per album per request. Kerascene Music uses Pay Pal for all incoming payments.

How do I deliver my music to Kerascene Music?

1. Send 2 regular audio CD’s of the album with song titles in the correct running order on the cover. Do not send MP3s or AACs (M4A) on a CD; send only regular audio CD's or CD-R's. Make sure you include your name, the band/artist name and the title of the CD. Mail the CD's to: Kerascene Music Distribution, 16 Russell Avenue, Dunchurch, Rugby, CV22 6PX, United Kingdom.

2. Email the album cover artwork as a .GIF, or .JPG file with a resolution of 600 x 600 to production@kerascene.com. Again, include your name, the band/artist name, and the title of the CD. If any songs on the album contain explicit lyrics, the album requires an advisory notice. Failure to indicate an album has explicit lyrics may cause your album to be rejected. Also include the genre of music, for listing purposes, and the PayPal email address where you want to receive your payments.

An album can hold no more than 74 minute's worth of songs, no matter how many songs it's divided into. All music is organized into albums and that is anything from one song to as many as you want.

Absolutely. If you have a single, it is still registered as an album with one song.

It should be up for sale within eight to ten weeks. Once we have encoded and delivered the music to the stores, we have no direct control over when your music will appear for sale, that is down to the specific store.

Once we receive payment from the stores we will pay you quarterly through your PayPal account. If you have sales of less than €75 it will be bought forward to the next quarter.

You receive $0.70 per song sold individually and $7.00 per album with 11 or more songs sold in its entirety (US iTunes rates). Kerascene Music takes no money from the sale of your music. You are paid the pay rate in the local currency of the country where the sale occurred. For example, if an album or song sells from the iTunes Japan store, iTunes Japan pays in Japanese yen (¥) so be aware that bank conversion rates are out of our control and change from day to day.

For a complete description of the Napster service, we suggest you read the Napster FAQ. Each time a Napster Subscriber ("Member" or "To Go Member") streams more than 30 seconds of your song, you get paid. When anyone, even a Napster Subscriber ("Member" or "To Go Member") permanently downloads one of your songs or albums, you also get paid. You receive $0.65 per song sold individually and $6.50 per album with 11 or more songs sold in its entirety. For each of your songs or albums streamed by a Napster Subscriber ("Member" or "To Go Member"), you receive a proportionate share of the membership fees, based on the number of streams of your music in that pay period, minus any applicable expenses. Kerascene Music takes no money from the sale of your music.

Rhapsody lets customers buy downloads as well as stream digital music directly from their site. Each time a Rhapsody Non-Subscribing Customer permanently downloads your songs you get a payment. When a Rhapsody Subscriber or Rhapsody Trial Subscriber permanently downloads, you also get a payment, but a fraction less. When a Rhapsody Subscriber streams or "tethered downloads" your songs or albums, you get a payment, but when a Rhapsody Trial Subscriber streams, you don't get a payment. Kerascene Music takes no money from the sale of your music.

What do I get when my music sells from eMusic?

eMusic works on a subscription pay rate permanent download model so the pay rate varies depending on how much money eMusic made in pre-sales each pay period. eMusic calculates how many songs were downloaded and how much money was made in the same three month period. To get the per-song pay rate eMusic divides the amount of money made by the number of songs downloaded. From this pay rate, eMusic then deducts out allowed expenses (these are not negotiable and are the same allowed expenses deducted from all other labels and artists working with eMusic). Of what remains, you get 60%. Kerascene Music takes no money from the sale of your music.

Yes, but you need to find out who owns the song and who to pay royalties to. This responsibility is left entirely up to you and you will need to pay the royalties to the artists. Organisations such as BMI, or ASCAP can help, as can The Harry Fox Agency who have posted a Digital Licensing FAQ.

How long will my music be available in the stores and how does the automatic renewal work?

Your music will remain in the stores until you request it to be removed. Exactly 12 months after you signed up you will automatically be charged the annual renewal fee for that album and this will be taken from your sales.

None. The only way to change anything about a release once it has been delivered is to take it down and resend it and this will incur all applicable takedown and delivery fees.

How do I notify Kerascene Music that I want my music removed from the stores?

You can have your music taken down from the stores at any time. Just send an email to musicdistribution@kerascene.com and include all the details and specific instructions. Remember, if you ask for your album to be taken down from any store within the first 6 months, you will be charged a one-time administrative fee of €75.00 per album per request. We can take an album down, but we can't take down individual songs that are part of an album.

Will Kerascene Music promote my music?
No. It is down to you to promote and sell your music. This can be achieved through traditional routes like gigs, physical music press and media promotion. It should also be achieved through website links - your website and community sites like MySpace - and links in all emails utilizing any mailing lists of fans. Links to your tracks on iTunes can be found by using the Apple ITMS linkmaker. Remember to use every opportunity to make it clear where your music is on sale. See our list of Music Promotion Tips.

Does Kerascene Music also have a music label?

Yes, but this should not be confused with Kerascene Music Distribution. The music label only works with artists who have signed up to the distribution for at least 6 months. This allows us to monitor which artists are actively working to promote themselves and whether they have a market that can be developed.
